Breaking News: Supreme Court Approves Release of Film on Kanhaiya Lal Murder Case Despite Legal Objections
New Delhi | July 10, 2025 — The Supreme Court of India has granted permission for the release of the controversial film “Udaipur Files,” which is based on the gruesome murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur in 2022. The murder had sent shockwaves across the country, as it was recorded on CCTV and circulated widely on social media, leaving the nation in disbelief.
The film, set to hit theaters soon, has already sparked legal battles even before its release. One of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, Javed, approached the Supreme Court seeking a ban on the film, claiming that its content could influence the ongoing NIA trial and compromise a fair judicial process.
The Delhi High Court had earlier permitted the free screening of the film, citing public interest and the importance of freedom of expression. Meanwhile, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) informed the court on July 9 that several objectionable scenes have been removed to avoid communal unrest and ensure compliance with legal standards.
Javed’s petition argued that the film’s narrative could shift public opinion, potentially leading to media trials and affecting judicial neutrality. He also labeled the content as communal and provocative. However, the Supreme Court overruled the objections, stating that the freedom of expression and public awareness outweigh speculative concerns.
The film promises to uncover unknown facts and perspectives related to the murder that have not been explored publicly. While producers claim it is created for entertainment purposes, the dark storytelling and real-life references have made it a subject of intense debate and public curiosity.
As per the current ruling, “Udaipur Files” will release on its scheduled date. The verdict marks a significant precedent in the debate around films inspired by real-life crimes and their impact on ongoing trials.
