Modi in Brazil LIVE: Global South is Victim of Double Standards, Says PM Modi at BRICS Summit
Brasília, July 5, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the BRICS Summit 2025 in Brazil, issued a strong call for global reform, asserting that the Global South continues to suffer from systemic double standards in international governance and policy-making. Addressing world leaders and delegates from the BRICS nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — PM Modi emphasized the urgent need for inclusivity and fairness in global decision-making institutions.
Delivering his remarks during the summit’s plenary session, PM Modi said, “For too long, the nations of the Global South have borne the burden of decisions in which they had no voice. Today, we face challenges ranging from climate change to food and energy insecurity, yet the systems meant to support us are outdated and biased.”
The Prime Minister underlined that developing countries are disproportionately impacted by crises they did little to cause, including global inflation, environmental degradation, and digital inequality. He called for restructuring international institutions such as the United Nations, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund, noting that these bodies still reflect post-World War realities rather than current global dynamics.
This year’s BRICS Summit, hosted in Brasília, has taken on increased geopolitical significance as the bloc discusses expansion, trade realignment, and deeper collaboration among developing economies. India has emerged as a leading voice pushing for reform within the multilateral system and promoting the interests of the Global South, especially amid rising global polarization.
Modi also spoke about strengthening cooperation on clean energy, digital innovation, and sustainable development, while encouraging BRICS members to facilitate smoother trade and investment flows among themselves and with partner nations in the Global South.
The visit to Brazil marks PM Modi’s first multilateral appearance since returning to power in India earlier this year. His address at the BRICS Summit is being viewed as a strategic statement positioning India as a key global player advocating for balanced, equitable, and representative global governance.
As discussions continue in the days ahead, India is expected to present concrete proposals aimed at increasing the representation of emerging economies in key global institutions and mechanisms.
