Bharat Bandh on July 9: 25 Crore Workers to Shut Down India — What You Need to Know!
Crores of Workers to Join Nationwide Strike on July 9, Disruptions Expected Across Key Sectors
In what is expected to be one of the largest coordinated protests in recent years, crores of workers across India are set to participate in a nationwide strike on July 9, called by major central trade unions. The strike, backed by over 10 prominent trade unions including AITUC, CITU, INTUC, AICCTU, and SEWA, aims to protest against the Centre’s labour policies, increasing privatization, and dilution of workers’ rights through the four new labour codes.
The strike is expected to significantly impact key sectors such as banking, insurance, coal mining, power, construction, transport, and postal services. Organizers claim over 25 crore workers may participate, signaling massive disruption to public services. Farmers’ organizations, including the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and the All India Kisan Sabha, have also extended support to the strike, opposing proposed Free Trade Agreements and demanding better agricultural protections.
Trade unions allege that the labour codes undermine job security, legalize longer working hours, and curtail collective bargaining. Bank and insurance employees have raised objections to privatization plans, disinvestment in LIC, and the push for 100% FDI in key financial institutions. Rural bank employees from AIRRBEA have also joined the call, protesting against the IPO-driven privatization of regional rural banks and demanding pension reforms and permanent recruitment.
The strike, initially planned for May, was postponed due to national security concerns following a terror incident in Jammu and Kashmir. With the rescheduled date now fixed, various states are preparing for possible disruptions. Power sector employees, especially in Uttar Pradesh, have warned of potential blackouts if their grievances remain unaddressed.
Authorities across different states are taking precautionary steps to ensure essential services are not affected. However, public transport, banking operations, and several government functions are expected to run at minimal capacity or remain closed. Schools and colleges in some areas may also suspend operations.
With both workers and farmers uniting in protest, the July 9 Bharat Bandh is poised to send a strong message to policymakers. Citizens are advised to plan ahead and stay updated with local advisories to navigate expected disruptions.
