Accused in Gopal Khemka Murder Case Shot Dead in Bihar Encounter
Date: July 8, 2025
Location: Patna, Bihar
In a major development in the sensational murder case of prominent Bihar businessman Gopal Khemka, a key accused was shot dead during a police encounter in Bihar’s Vaishali district late Monday night. The accused, identified as Shahid Alam, was reportedly involved in the brutal killing of Khemka, who was gunned down in Hajipur in May this year.
The Encounter: What Happened
According to senior police officials, the encounter took place in the Mahua area of Vaishali after police received a tip-off about Shahid Alam’s presence in the region. A special team of Bihar Police launched a coordinated operation, which soon escalated into a gunfight when the accused allegedly opened fire at the personnel.
“In retaliatory firing, Shahid Alam sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead,” said Vaishali SP Ravi Ranjan Kumar.
Police recovered a pistol, multiple live cartridges, and a stolen two-wheeler from the scene.
Background: The Gopal Khemka Murder Case
Gopal Khemka, a well-known trader and businessman based in Hajipur, was shot dead on May 13, 2025, in broad daylight near his office. The killing had triggered massive protests by local business communities, demanding swift justice and tighter law enforcement.
Khemka was known for his philanthropic efforts and influence in local trade circles. His death sparked outrage across Bihar, especially in Vaishali and Patna, prompting political and police pressure to act swiftly.
Shahid Alam: A Prime Suspect
Shahid Alam was considered a key player in the conspiracy and execution of Khemka’s murder. Sources in the Bihar Police confirmed that Alam was under surveillance for weeks after being identified through CCTV footage and mobile call records.
“He was among the most wanted accused in the case and was also suspected of involvement in other criminal activities across North Bihar,” said a police official familiar with the investigation.
A first information report (FIR) against Shahid and five others was filed following the murder, and several arrests have already been made. Alam, however, had been absconding and was believed to have taken shelter in the border areas.
Reactions and Political Heat
The encounter has drawn mixed reactions. While many locals and business associations welcomed the development, some political parties have raised concerns about “extra-judicial actions.”
RJD spokesperson Manoj Jha called for a judicial inquiry into the encounter, stating, “While criminals should be brought to justice, we must ensure the rule of law prevails.”
On the other hand, Bihar Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary commended the police operation and reiterated the government’s commitment to “cleaning up crime and restoring law and order.”
Security Measures and Further Investigation
Following the encounter, security has been heightened in Hajipur and nearby areas to prevent any law-and-order issues. The Bihar DGP’s office confirmed that a magisterial inquiry has been initiated to verify the details of the encounter as per standard protocol.
Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its probe to identify other co-conspirators and financial links behind the crime.
Business Community Responds
The Bihar Chamber of Commerce and Industry released a statement praising the efforts of the Bihar Police. “This development brings some closure to a grieving community. We urge the state to take this momentum forward and eradicate the criminal-political nexus.”
A candle march and prayer meeting were held in Hajipur’s Gandhi Maidan in Khemka’s memory on Monday night.
