West Bengal, India – A massive fire broke out at an illegal oil processing unit in Balarampur, Purulia district, on Saturday, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky and triggering panic among local residents. The factory, operating without proper licenses or safety protocols, caught fire around midday, leading to a chaotic scene as villagers fled their homes fearing an explosion.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire originated from a makeshift oil distillation chamber. The flames rapidly spread due to highly flammable substances stored in barrels across the premises. Video footage shows towering flames and widespread damage to the surrounding area, including nearby buildings and farmland.
Fire services rushed to the scene and managed to contain the blaze after several hours of intense effort. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, although some residents have been hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on how such a hazardous facility was allowed to operate illegally. Residents claim they had previously raised concerns, but no action was taken.
Purulia District Magistrate confirmed that the oil unit was unauthorized and assured strict action would be taken against the owner and anyone responsible for allowing its operations. Environmental activists also raised concerns over toxic emissions and soil contamination.
This is the second such incident in West Bengal within three months, raising questions about enforcement of safety regulations in rural industrial zones.
