Shocking CCTV Footage: Kolkata Woman Dragged Into College Before Horrific Assault
A shocking case of gang-rape at South Calcutta Law College has sparked widespread outrage and raised fresh concerns about campus safety in the city. A 24-year-old female law student was allegedly raped by three men—two current students and one former student—inside the college premises on June 25.
According to police reports, the crime took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm in the college guard room. The three accused—Monojit Mishra (a former student and contract staffer), Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukherjee—allegedly lured the victim into the guard room, locked the college gate, and forced the security guard out. The victim was then repeatedly assaulted and filmed during the attack.
Investigators stated that the assault appeared premeditated. The accused had reportedly been targeting the victim since the start of her academic term. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by Kolkata Police is currently analyzing CCTV footage and mobile phone videos to gather further evidence. At least one 90-second video clip has already been recovered, and mobile devices belonging to the suspects have been seized for forensic examination.
The victim, who managed to file a complaint soon after the incident, revealed that the men consumed alcohol inside the guard room for hours after the assault. During this time, they allegedly threatened the college security guard to remain silent. The guard, identified as Pinaki Banerjee, was later arrested for failing to intervene and for allegedly facilitating the crime.
All four individuals—Mishra, Ahmed, Mukherjee, and Banerjee—have been arrested and are currently in police custody. Their remand has been extended until July 8 for further interrogation. The college has since expelled the three main accused and suspended on-campus activities while the investigation continues.
The case has stirred strong reactions across political and student circles, with calls for strict action and institutional accountability. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken note and is seeking a time-bound investigation. Comparisons have been drawn to previous incidents, such as the RG Kar Medical College case, highlighting systemic issues in campus safety protocols.
As the SIT continues its probe, public pressure is mounting on law enforcement and educational authorities to ensure justice and to implement stronger security measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
